Bustamante vs Souquet for Derby 9-Ball

Saturday, January 12, 2008

The finals of the Derby City Classic 9-Ball Division are now underway. Ralf Souquet will face Francisco Bustamante and Bustamante will face the task of defeating Souquet twice.

With three players left in the event, Bustamante drew a bye and Souquet had to play John Schmidt. Souquet won that match 7-6, but Schmidt had a buyback available and bought back into the event.

Bustamante had the luck of the draw again and drew the bye which forced Souquet to face Schmidt again. The score was 7-5 the second time, but it was still the same winner as Souquet eliminated Schmidt.

Souquet will now face Bustamante. Souquet has a buyback available, while Bustamante does not.

Bustamante has already locked up the all around award.

Francisco Bustamante at 4th Annual Hall of Fame Dinner

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

It was another full house for the 2008 One Pocket Hall of Fame dinner held Tuesday night during the middle of the action at the Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. With special guests with names like Reyes, Varner, Bustamante and Corr, and veterans of the road like Di Liberto, LeBron and Rood, the room was chock full of veteran players and fans of pool action. This was truly an occasion of great players being honored by their peers. Like One Pocket inductee Billy Incardona said, “To be honored among all these great champions is really something special.”

Co-Master of Ceremonies Grady Mathews and Freddy ‘The Beard’ Bentivegna led numerous other guest speakers in honoring each inductee in turn. Of course there were old road stories galore, and plenty of good-natured ribbing, but there were a few surprisingly touching stories as well. As much as these players have butted heads over the years, it is something special to see the genuine respect these guys have for each other when it comes time for Hall of Fame honors.

First up was this year’s Lifetime Pool in Action award that went to Jimmy Reid, the champion player who has been fighting a tough personal battle against esophageal cancer. Jimmy not only came to Louisville to receive his award, he valiantly entered all three divisions of the tournament, which is tough enough for those in good health to handle. When the banquet crowd was asked to “raise your hand if you’ve got Jimmy Reid stuck,” not a single hand went up in a room loaded with great players, past and present. The man is a definite fighter, with a very strong will to survive, and we all wish him the very best.

Turning our attention to the One Pocket inductees, Philadelphia’s Jimmy Fusco was honored, and good-naturedly harangued, as his cousin Pete Fusco and others described Jimmy’s unrestrained desire to tangle with the best, even if it meant going broke. Their entertaining narratives illustrated that to become the best, you have to compete against the best. Jimmy was clearly humbled to be considered one of the best, and in Freddy Bentivegna’s words, “One of the very select few that truly understand the right way to play the game.”

JoAnn (Jansco) McNeal graciously accepted induction for her father and uncle, the brothers George and Paulie Jansco, for their contribution to the legacy of the game as promoters. Between the Johnston City and Stardust tournaments, these two dressed up both the game and the players, got pool on TV, and into the history books for all time. Danny Di Liberto shared a few of his personal Johnston City stories, as he likened his own experience there to going to pool college – especially a college for pool gambling. In his rookie year at Johnston City, the veteran hustler Earl Schriver advised the young and admittedly square Di Liberto, “Kid, keep your mouth shut and your ears open and you’ll learn a lot.” It is hard to overestimate the significance of Johnston City to the legacy of ‘Pool in Action’, and the induction of George & Paulie Jansco is long overdue...

Freddie ‘The Beard’ introduced a dapper and dignified Billy Incardona, who clearly had a great time, equally ribbing his peers and basking in the recognition for an exemplary career as a great player, a savvy gambler, a wise and entertaining commentator, and a human being with a big heart. Player after player paid respects to Billy’s forty years of winning pool, and he’s not done yet, having been spotted several times in the action room at the Derby this year, with cue in hand and cash on the line. Pat Fleming spoke about the important role Billy played in turning Accustats from a statistical reporting concept for pool into the industry leader in pool videos.

Last, but not least, was the induction of banking legend Donny Anderson in the Legends of Bank Pool category. His long-time rival and fellow Hall of Fame member, Truman Hogue, joined ‘The Beard’ in introducing ‘The Cincinnati Kid’. For years and years Donny was a banking terror in a town that had some terrors. Truman acknowledged that he never could beat Donny, and hated competing against him all those years, until finally he became a fan himself, admitting, “I guess he beat me so much I began to like him.” Despite his physical frailty, Donny was determined to stand out of his wheel chair and be helped up to the podium, where he brought the evening to a rousing conclusion with a surprisingly strong voice.

Meanwhile, Ed Kelly, who has been unable to attend the annual HOF dinner since his 2005 election into the One Pocket Hall of Fame, was able to slip over to Louisville on the Sunday after the Derby City Classic ended to receive his belated induction. In a small private gathering of legends of pool action assembled by photographer Diana Hoppe, Grady Mathews surprised Kelly with his HOF plaque.

Trivia:
  • Bustamante has played since the age of 10 years old, and has won titles like The Munich Masters, The German 9-Ball Championship and The Japan 9-Ball Championship making him one of billiard's greatest international stars.
  • With his win in Tulsa, "Django" locked up the 1998 Camel Pro Billiards Series year-long point fund's top spot. He then finished the season in record breaking style, winning the Columbus 10-Ball Open and becoming the first player to win three Camel titles in one season. His Columbus 10-Ball title also completed the first ever Camel trifecta, with titles in each of the three games contested on the Camel Pro Billiards Series: 8-Ball, 9-Ball and 10-Ball. Known for his graceful style at the table and his signature behind-the-back shot, "Django" is one of the best Filipino players of the game along with fellow Kapampangan Efren Reyes, Marlon Manalo and Ronato Alcano.
  • One of his trademarks is shooting with the cue behind his back. He also holds the world record for having the most powerful break shot: 43 miles per hour.
  • In 1999, Bustamante finished 3rd place in WPA World Nine-ball Championship after losing to Efren Reyes who later won it. Months later, he won the International Challenge of Champions. He won that tournament again three years later.
  • The next year, Bustamante won the Motolite 9-ball Tournament, an event held in the Philippines, at the expense of Antonio Lining. The victory earned him $30K which was the largest first prize offered in a Philippine-held tournament at that time (this was later surpassed when Alcano won $100K in the 2006 WPA World Nine-ball Championship which was held in that country).
  • The year 2002 was probably the coldest year for Bustamante, especially when considering his experience at the World Pool Championships. While the tournament was still going on, Bustamante was most shock when he receive a phone call from his wife informing him that his daughter ,who was less than a year old, had died. Devastated he was by this, "Django" almost wanted to forfeit his contention at tournament and return to the Philippines. But some people around convince him to go on.
  • On his way to the final, Bustamante bested Antonio Lining in the last 16, Efren Reyes in the quarter finals and Ching Shun Yang in semis. In the final, he met Earl Strickland, the 2-time winner of the tournament. Bustamante was leading most of the time and could have won the title. At one point, he went for a jump shot but missed. Strickland returned to the table and won a few rack in a row to win the match 17-15.
  • His loss at the final of the World Championship was most definitely a big blow to him on account that there's probably no reason for him to lose. Nonetheless. Bustamante starting making a number of tournaments wins shortly thereafter.
  • Bustamante won the Peninsula 9-Ball Open, Gabriels Las Vegas International 9-Ball, IBC Tokyo 9-Ball International and All Japan Championship. He even won the Sudden Death 7-Ball tournament and dedicated it to his daughter whom he had tragically lost. With such a string victories, he became the AzBilliards 2002 Player of the Year.
  • Despite not winning the crown at the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship, Bustamante had an extraordinary performance in the tournament. There, he won 18 matches in a row. This is a feat that perhaps no one can surpass or even equal. This also is most definitely a world record in pool for the most consecutive matches won in a tournament.
  • In 2007, "Bustie", as he is fondly called in the United States, was undefeated and snatched the United States Pro Tour Championship held at the Normandie Casino in Los Angeles, California.
  • Despite the fact he never won a world championship, Bustamante is rated second to Reyes when it comes to recognition.

Bustamante wins Hard Times One Pocket

francisco_bustamante_22 Francisco "Django" Bustamante over Chohan for Hard Times One Pocket Win

Great win for the Filipino, as "www.azbilliards.com" reports:

"What could be better for Francisco Bustamante than an undefeated run through the field to win the 9-ball division at the Hard Times Billiards Summer Jamboree? How about another undefeated run through the field to win the one-pocket division?

Bustamante made his way to the match for the hot-seat without letting an opponent get to the hill against him, but that streak was ended by Tony Chohan when he took an early 2-1 lead against Bustamante for the hot-seat. Bustamante came back and won that match 3-2 to send Chohan to the one loss side, but Chohan's stay on the left side of the board didn't last long.

Chohan rolled over David Gross 3-0 in under 15 minutes allowing Gross a total of three balls pocketed over three games.

The rematch between Chohan and Bustamante in the extended race to five finals was a marathon. Their first match had lasted less than 40 minutes for five games, but the rematch lasted nearly 3 hours as Chohan climbed to a 3-1 lead, but saw that lead erased at 4-4.

The final game saw Bustamante on the defensive for much of the action, but he kept with it and took advantage of any opening Chohan left him as he won the final game for first place.

Bustamante earned $3500 for first place, while Chohan settled for $2200. Gross and Jose Parica filled out the top four spots."
